In the southern wing — dealing with 19th and 20th centuries — I fell among the animal paintings of Bordeaux-born Rosa Bonheur. On a Monday afternoon, I ask no more of art than the hugely powerful horses of her Treading the Wheat in Camargue. The law remained on the statute book to Bonheur met Queen Victoria, was a friend of Buffalo Bill and, during her life, sold paintings for a fortune.
